Such Great Heights
Our final activity was a microlight flight, taking us on an aerial tour of Zambia and Zimbabwe, focusing on Victoria Falls. A microlight is like a motorcycle with parachute wings. The contraption needs a lot of speed to take off, and then it just sails with a tiny motor. It was just me, the pilot, and the sky. I could really “Feel the Freedom,” as the company’s motto states.
The 15-minute ride was a perfect end to our trip. The pilot pointed out our hotel, Livingstone Island, the rapids, the lion encounter, Botswana, and the zigzags of the Zambezi. We also got a bird’s eye view of hippos and elephants and crocodiles.
After that short flight, we had 2 long ones. In planes. We flew from Livingstone to Joburg to Cape Town, and then rented a car for the next week. Tanya and I will be cruising along the Garden Route, stopping to smell the roses (vineyards, ostrich farms, shark diving) along the way.

You are taking years off my life. Its a good thing I only know about these adventures AFTER they have occurred.

November 17th, 2005 at 5:19 pmSo how fast did you count to 18 on the river? That is hairy stuff, man. I was thrown out of a canoe on the Brule River in Wisconsin, but the only time I came close to drowning was training for that trip on a placid lake within 20 yards of shore. We were practicing ditch drills, the canoe rolled, my leg got caught in the thwart and I couldn’t seem to get free. I think my time underwater must’ve felt like those 18 seconds. But here we both are.
Don’t do it again.
Love, YGOP
November 17th, 2005 at 8:07 pmkatie - of course i remember that! and didn’t i spill the cheerios everywhere? good times.
ted - not only do i still watch you dancing half-naked now and then (that came out wrong), but i show the dvd to all my traveling companions as well. tanya can’t get enough of it, it’s kinda weird actually.
dad - i’m sure i counted super fast and that it seemed a lot longer than it actually was. it was still freaky, but that happens a lot with rafting. hakuna matata.
