Beauty and the Beast
“HOLD THE SALSA!” That became the joke of the day – the command we shouted after a sloppy attempt to snack on chips and dip in the car.
Whereas Cooloola Shire is popular among locals, Fraser Island is a tourist hotspot. It’s the largest sand island in the world and home to 7 ecosystems. And dingoes. We took the blue beast over on the barge, and then drove along the beach and rough sand roads through the forest. We waded through the fresh water in Eli Creek before going head first on sandboards into Lake Wabby. The lake is bordered by a giant sand mound, and, for the majority of our time there, we laughed at a group of (California) girly girls shrieking as they slid down it, often falling off before reaching the water. They were so concerned with their bikini tops that they forgot about steering. An Irish spectator remarked: “Don’t hold them up, hold the board up!”
The more picturesque spot was Lake McKenzie, with its crystal clear water and white sand beach. Tanya and I picnicked on its shore and drifted with its current until it was time to head back to the barge. It’s amazing we haven’t gotten bogged in the sand yet, for we passed numerous victims, and the restaurant we went to last night had an impressive wall of shame – enormous trucks slowly sinking into the ocean. We still have the drive back ahead of us though, so knock on wood!

January 23rd, 2006 at 12:08 amHey, mister, just got back from a wonderful evening at the Mohn’s beautiful house with the Booths and David Venning among the guests. We all shared vacation pictures and reminisces (everyone says hi to you and NIck). Showed the Udon Thani Xmas dvd I finished this morning (yes, I have a copy for you) and the Charlie “FIrst CIrcle” video, though we couldn’t finish it in the Mohn’s fabulous upstairs screening room because there was a technical hiccup from the super-sensitive equipment (best screening room I’ve ever been in), so we watched it downstairs on the computer later.
Sounds like you’re getting a real Aussie look down under. Lucky you. Speaking of which, people often ask me, “Hey, does that kid realize how lucky he is?” And I tell them quite simply, “Yeah, he does.”
Have a go, mate.
Love, YGOP
