Heaps of Hope

Yay! A picture of Tanya! Taken by yours truly at The Cape of Good Hope, the southern most tip of Africa. The coastal drive to get there was spectacular. The landscapes felt like a mix of Malibu and Nantucket, plus enormous mountain ridges that surrounded charming ocean coves. Green bush struggled to keep up with the rocky slopes, and thick cloud blankets topped them off at the other end. They looked windblown and aged, sitting within the towns like big friendly giants. I kept scaring Tanya when I yelled “Stop, stop! Pullover” at every viewpoint. Along the way, we stopped at Boulders Beach to see the colony of 3,000 African penguins. Although we only saw about 60, the signs exclaiming “Watch for penguins under your vehicle!” (with a penguin on its back under a car) made up for it. As did the shop lady’s horrified reaction when I asked her if the jerkey they were selling was penguin. We continued on to The Cape of Good Hope, and hiked up to the monumental lighthouse. Severe winds made the walk harder than it should have been, but a view of infinite ocean made it worth it. There was also a signpost pointing to various significant cities, listing their distances from the spot. I had to represent, and took a picture under “New York: 12,541 km.”

I haven’t checked out your site for a while - a week or two. Once I logged on it looked like I hadn’t seen it in a two months. I went to Lubbock, TX last week, you went to Africa. Your travels are either getting better and better or I’m getting more and more tired of sittin ’round. I really liked looking all your photos of India and all kids of places. I think I fell in love once or twice. I hope you did too…
