Going out with a Bang
You'd think that after the first night I would have gotten used to sleeping within a canopy bug net. I was woken up last night from one of its thin mesh walls caressing my cheek (it was being blown by the fan 2 feet away). I had already flipped out the night before thinking that I was trapped, so I kept calm. But the question was: Do I untuck part of the canopy from beneath the mattress and risk letting bugs into my chambers or do I just hold it? The latter sounded like less effort, but an hour later I surrendered.
Today was going to be a day where I tried kite surfing (Mui Ne's claim to fame), but, to my dismay, I was told I couldn't master the sport in the 3 hours I had. Who knew?
Soooo, instead we hopped on our faithful scooters and followed our whims. We passed through some more incredible villages, where I kept wishing I could just blink and take a picture. The highlight of the ride: when 2 cute little boys out of a group of kids asked to ride on my bike with me. I thought, "sure, why not? It'll make a great photo." I was thinking something else when they started tickling me and covered my eyes so that I nearly crashed into the aluminum wall of someone's house. I'm not the coolest cat on a bike to begin with and, like I mentioned before, stopping is counter-intuitive. But after the chickens stopped clucking, the children stopped laughing, and the witnesses went back into their homes, we were all good. Oh, and after a group of kids pulled my bike out of the sand.
Another 4-hour car ride and here we are back in Ho Chi Minh City. We arrived just in time to visit one of Jamie's favorite tailoring shops and got some very handsome linen shirts made. So hot right now.

it seems like you are almost done with your vietnamese adventure and i just wanted to say that i hope you don’t leave any of your dong behind…that would be tragic
August 23rd, 2005 at 10:20 amdude, biking is way harder than it seems. i hope your dong has lasted the entire trip as i would have to assume its been pretty worn down by now. speaking of which, “going out with a bang” might give a wrong impression. im just throwing that out there
August 23rd, 2005 at 10:57 am“Bug O’ War”
I will not play at tug o’ war.
August 23rd, 2005 at 11:50 amI’d rather play at bug o’ war.
Where I lift my net,
And place my bet.
Where the bugs go,
I do not know.
Where I bite the bugs,
Before they bite me.
And I drift to sleep,
Happy as can be.

Oh by the way, I use to have one of those mosquito nets in my room (made me feel like a princess!!!) and I had it for a about a week before I thought I was gonna suffocate and die, and I didn’t even have to worry about the bugs. I can only imagine your pain, but at least your didn’t have any underwear to deal with once you gave in and made a run for it!
