Motorcycle Diary

In Biker Boys Vietnam, Jamie and I each rented a scooter and cruised down the coast. The sequel is a bit different: Kyle and I rented one real deal motorcycle for the two of us. I didn’t trust myself to drive one. There are no road rules in either country. Buses swerved in and out of tuktuks, often just barely squeezing by one another (it reminded me of that scene in Harry Potter). Motorcycles buzzed around cars like flies. We saw an elephant riding in a truck. We saw thirty guys crammed onto the back of a tractor. We saw sand, ocean, palm trees, and boats the entire way. Although we left Unawatuna without any set destination, we found a perfect one: a lighthouse bordered by secret coves. After an hour of riding in and out of small towns, we followed the handwritten “lighthouse” signs until it stood in front of us. Kyle and I climbed the spiral staircase to the top; I felt like a king surveying his domain. On the way back we saw even more towns and beaches (aka we got lost). But it worked out beautifully – we reached the final stretch into Unawatuna as the sun was setting, illuminating the palm trees like shadow puppets and shining light on the stilt fishermen as they took their posts at sea. Plus I made it back in time for the last few minutes of volleyball.
