A Hue Day
The sound of an alarm clock is officially my least favorite sound. At 3:30 this morning we woke up to catch a 6 o'clock flight to Hue, a central city located near the 17th parallel and the DMZ. We were originally going to go directly from Ho Chi Minh City in the south to Hanoi in the noth, but realized we had a few spare days and, well, it was on the Hue. (Love those puns, if you hadn't noticed.)
We had an interesting time at the airport this morning. First, the name on my plane ticket (Charlie) didn't match my passport name (Charles) and it caused quite a little ordeal. I thought "same same" (as they say here), but no. And then there was breakfast. We ordered 2 iced coffees and got 2 cups of hot tea. We asked for some cheese and got bowls of soup. It was just too much at 4 in the morn.
We checked into our hotel around the time I would've been waking up normally, but the upside: a full day to explore. We hired cyclos (the bicycle-like vehicles with a one-passenger seat in the front) to show us around the one-time capital city, focusing on the Citadel and the Imperial Palace. Within the walls of the massive Citadel, only 20 out of 148 buildings survived the war. Since Hue was essentially the divide between the conflicting halves of the country, it was hit extremely hard. The most bombed site on the planet is not too far from our hotel.
Since we woke up so early, we got beat pretty fast. After a nice little massage (see a pattern here?) we got a quick bite that satisfied both lunch and dinner, and called it a day. A Hue day.

Charlie / Michale Vaughn who prefers to be called Vaughn…thanks
Clearly you know who this is….(the two greatest people alive…everrrr!) We just wanted you to know that Sydney Bristow and Amanda “WHATS-A-TACO?” Thomas just officially got married. That’s right. Gold Wedding bands and an over the top ceremony — wish you had been there.
From Sydney:
It’s ok vaughn….like your father said….you can set your heart by that old watch he left you…and as we all know that watch DEFFFFF stopped the day you met ME! Lucky for you in our Rambaldi world where prophecies always come true…..that means this faux marriage i have with this Amanda WHATS-A-TACO character will dissolve as quickly as your marriage did with Lauren. ** I have suspicions that she might be a member of the Covenant** Because you see vaughn….sydney and michael are always meant to be together. You still have to take me to a beachin Santa Barbara to propose because i’m a selfish bitch and apparently proposing on a plane flying over a 3-D RED BALL iin Europe just wasnt good enough for me, ok? miss you vaughn…no more massages! THINK OF SYDNEY!

From Amanda “WHATS-A-TACO?” Thomas:
mr melvoin…. i hope you are living up to the true standards of a globetrotting teenager and making me proud out there in the pan-asian world (i dont know if that is accurate but it sounds cool) i drive by your house multiple times a day, not because i am a stalker but because its literally on my way to anything outside of my house, and im sad i cant stop in and say hi and eat your cake. i leave for college tommorow and your probably leaving for something a hell of a lot more AMAZING than me… like cliff diving off the mountains of sipan (is that even possible?? haha) but have a kick ass time wherever you are and i will def post some more stuff later!! xoxoxo
August 26th, 2005 at 10:53 pmCharlie, we love you at home and a-Hue. xxoo, Dad (you don’t think your gift for punning just fell out of the sky, did you?)
August 27th, 2005 at 9:43 amCharlio- You’re like Carmen San Diego, boy style. I love it!! So I HAD to write you 1. so that you’d know i’m still thinking about my brilliant friend who travels the world and 2. to remind you to write me a postcard…it will be the last one in my little “cartes postales” book. What a perfect finish. I am definitely following your globe-trotting… someone’s gotta do it, eh? Better keep in touch when u get some spare tiempo.
